Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the place to learn this. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

结构：两者可调和，起承转合。

分析：

承：家长应该教+论据：和孩子在一起时间长，于是可以关注孩子的德行举止。而且还可以经常和他们沟通道德话题。

转：但是学校是个学习如何成为社会好成员的地方+论据：学校本身是个小社会，于是学生在其中可懂得如何搞好关系，如何面对各种社会挑战和压力。

Children’s education should include understanding their responsibility to society. If schools and parents do not provide this together, it may lead to problems for society in the future. Therefore both parents and schools should play their part in influencing children to build good relationships in the wider community.

 

Parents are ideally placed to exert a moral influence on their children because they spend more time with their children than teachers do. While the average teacher may only spend a few hours a week with a particular student and may have 40 or 50 other students in the classroom, the parents will see them every day. Furthermore, parents can give close personal attention to one or two children, and so they will be able to discuss complex moral issues in depth which children will understand more clearly. Therefore, the personal relationship that parents build up with their children gives them important advantages in some areas of social education.

 

On the other hand, this does not automatically mean that parenting education is enough to ensure the decent behaviour of their children. After all, many parents do not have the specialised skills themselves. In this case, schools also have some advantages in developing this form of education. A school is a smaller version of society, in which children can learn how to respond to social pressure and contribute to a harmonious community. For example, children are more likely to get involved with antisocial behaviour that affects the community as a whole at school rather than at home. Examples of this are vandalism and bad language. If schools can punish children and put a stop to these while they are young, it will prevent them getting into more serious trouble in the future.

 

While the majority of parents enjoy significant advantages in promoting this form of education in the family home, schools can add to the work done by parents, giving children the chance to learn lessons in a community. Therefore home and school are both important places to learn social education.
